Lake Powell, AZ

Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, straddling the border of Arizona and Utah located just 3 miles from Page. This popular vacation spot known for houseboat, speedboat, and kayaking excursions attracts around two million visitors every year. It is the second-largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,000 acre-feet of water when full. However, due to high water demands for human and agricultural consumption and droughts in the area, both Lake Mead and Lake Powell have diminished in size several times during the 21st century in terms of volume of water, depth, and surface area. Lake Powell was created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the Glen Canyon Dam, which the area is now known as the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Besides being one of the most loved recreation spots in the American Southwest, Lake Powell is functionally a water storage facility for the Upper Basin states of the Colorado River Compact (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico). Other environmental concerns have risen out the damming of the Colorado River. But for now, keeping water levels at a more sustainable level to provide for growing populations and resource demands remains the focus.

Lake Powell has a lot every everything for everyone when in comes to accommodations. Where else could you stay in an upscale resort, luxury houseboat or bivvy camp all in the same recreational area? Lake Powell is for everyone. Whether you decide to stay indoors, on the water or camp, Lake Powell can deliver the adventure or relaxation you are craving on your next vacation. Take a look at our Lake Powell Hotels and Camping page for some lodging options. Also, our Lake Powell Houseboat Rentals section can give you an idea of what to expect if you're considering taking a boat out and making it your vacation home for a few days.

Lake Powell, depending on the time of year you visit, can be incredibly relaxing or a complete party. The lake is big enough that you can find yourself a more secluded cove for some peace and quiet if that's more your style. Visitors enjoy basking in the sunlight from the deck of a boat, on one of the many beaches or while paddleboarding. Outdoor enthusiasts like using a houseboat as their basecamp, while they take a personal watercraft to go exploring the slot canyons that can only be accessed by small boats, kayaks or paddleboards. These small finger-like canyons that branch off the main lake is one of the rare features that Lake Powell offers as this area was once a canyon before it got dammed and flooded. Of course, jet-skiing, powerboating and waterslides can also be expected at Lake Powell. Whatever you'd like your lake experience to be, Lake Powell can deliver.
